A visit to our Wickford hygienist should not be viewed as an ‘optional extra’ if you want a healthy mouth.
Although appointments are occasionally missed, most of our patients at the Cygnet Dental Practice do keep their regular appointments to see us, as they understand how essential this is to help keep their teeth and gums in good condition.
Our team of dentists and hygienists will advise you on the best ways to maintain good oral health and also undertake any treatments where needed.
Even if you feel that you brush your teeth well at home, we strongly recommend that you support this by visiting the hygienist at the Cygnet Dental Practice regularly too. We advise this for a number of reasons as follows:
- Gum disease is the main cause of tooth loss in the UK and this is an area where the hygienist is highly trained. Keeping your gums in good health will go a long way to ensure that, barring accidents and with good personal care, you should hopefully keep most of your natural teeth throughout your life. By performing a professional dental clean, the hygienist will remove any hardened plaque from the teeth and gum-line, so helping you to have healthy gums.
- Many of us will have been taught oral health habits from our parents. Whilst this is obviously done with the best intentions, it is not always the best advice available. Some older suggestions for brushing the teeth such as ‘brush harder’ or ‘rinse well’ are more likely to cause more harm than good to your teeth.
Hygienists undergo regular training and are up to date with the latest techniques and advice. They will be able to teach you how to brush your teeth correctly and also how to clean between the teeth using dental floss or special small brushes. This is a key area where gingival bacteria form and which need to be removed.
- The hygienist will take the time to discuss your lifestyle, including smoking and drinking habits, both known to be problematic for your teeth and gums. They are not there to ‘lecture’ you however, and you should not feel discouraged from attending because of that. They will simply offer advice based on the information that you give them, and, if you continue to smoke, then that is your free choice, but you will at least be aware of the potential consequences. Should you decide, after talking to the hygienist that you would like to stop, they will be able to point you towards where you can get help.
- Finally, a less significant but nonetheless pleasant benefit of a visit to the hygienist is that your teeth and gums will feel much fresher and cleaner following a scale and polish and remove a significant amount of external staining too. You may even wish to complement this with one of our fast and efficient teeth whitening treatments.
