Our Essex dental team are here to help.
If you are afraid of visiting the dentist, you are far from alone. Whilst it may be of little consolation to dental phobics, it is thought that between a quarter and a third of all dental patients in the UK suffer from some degree of dental anxiety.
Whilst this is little more than unpleasant for most, who manage to maintain regular dental appointments despite their fears, it can have detrimental effects on oral health for those whose fear and anxiety is enough to cause them to miss or cancel appointments, leading to long periods of time with no professional dental care.
The importance of regular checks ups at the Cygnet Dental Practice cannot be underestimated. Most dental problems can be treated in a relatively straightforward manner provided that they are detected early on. Small amounts of decay can be removed and filled, and early stage gum disease can be reversed through suggested improvements in your oral health care perhaps accompanied by a thorough ‘scale and polish’.
The problems really arise when these issues are allowed to advance, as often happens with anxious dental patients. By the time they have little option but to have a tooth looked at, possibly because of intense pain, it may be too late to save the tooth, or, where it can be saved, needs a far more invasive procedure than would have been the case. This is obviously far from ideal for someone who is afraid of dentists and may make things worse for the future.
All of our dental team are aware that, for some patients, even a check up can be an ordeal, and we promise you that you will be treated in a friendly and courteous manner. Helping an anxious patient to relax is not only in the patient’s interest, but that of the dentist too. Procedures generally run much more smoothly where a patient is relaxed in the dental chair and allows the dentist to perform any necessary procedure without feeling the need to ‘fight’ against it.
Some of our patients, not only from Wickford, but surrounding villages such as Shotgate and Downham, have told us that they find relaxation or breathing techniques useful in helping them to relax too, and you may wish to investigate these further. Whilst deep dental anxieties may only be completely cured through therapy and the like; at the Cygnet Dental Practice, we do our best to provide an environment that is conducive to relaxation and hope that, along with help from our friendly dental team, this helps nervous patients to overcome their fears.
We don’t rest on our laurels though, and, if you have any suggestions that you feel might help patients to relax, whether that be the environment in our waiting and treatment rooms, or the way our staff respond to you, we would certainly like to hear from you.
