Using the All on 4 procedure to replace a full arch of missing teeth.
Slowly but surely, dental implants are starting to replace dentures when it comes to replacing a missing tooth.
Because the implant itself replicates the role of a natural tooth root, it provides an extremely strong and long lasting option.
For this reason, many of our Cygnet Dental Practice patients who come from both Wickford and surrounding areas such as Downham in Essex, have taken up this option instead of the cheaper but often more troublesome option of a partial denture.
Do dental implants have a role to play when it comes to replacing a full arch of missing teeth though? Surely, the procedure would be extremely lengthy and prohibitively expensive to replace each missing tooth with an individual implant? The reality is that while this is true, this particular approach is also unnecessary, and dental implants can be used in a successful procedure called ‘all on 4’ which uses 4 dental implants which then hold a fixed bridge in place.
This is a long lasting and convenient solution to a missing arch of teeth and can sometimes be performed in a single day, leaving you with a new set of teeth from the moment that you leave our Wickford practice.
To perform this procedure, a local anaesthetic will be given, and, following x-rays and scans to determine the exact placement of the implants, two standard implants will be placed towards the front of the jaw. Two implants are then placed at the rear of the jaw which are specially designed to enter the jaw at a precise angle. This has two benefits in that bone loss usually no longer requires a prior bone graft, and it also provides a much stronger anchor to hold the bridge in place. Your custom made fixed bridge is then attached to the implants and any final adjustments made.
Unlike dentures, the fixed bridge is not removed for cleaning and should be maintained similarly to your natural teeth. We will discuss this in more detail at your consultation, but, suffice to say, it is important, despite the artificial nature of the teeth, to keep your mouth healthy and free of problems such as gum disease which could threaten the stability of your new teeth.
If you currently have full dentures or are in the position where you will need them soon, why not arrange a consultation at the Cygnet Dental Practice in Essex to discuss an ‘all on 4’ procedure as an alternative option?
