Transparent dental braces for a less stressful route to straighter teeth.
One of the most common concerns that we hear at the Cygnet Dental Practice when people have crooked teeth, is that they don’t wish to have braces because they are unsightly. The bad news is that only orthodontics can reposition your teeth so that they are nice and even. The good news is that there are now a wide range of ‘invisible braces’ that are available to do the job in a more discreet manner.
One of the more well known orthodontic systems of this type is Invisalign, and we are pleased to offer it to our Wickford dental patients. It operates on an entirely different system to traditional braces and arguably works with a greater degree of comfort and discretion.
What is Invisalign?
Unlike most traditional orthodontic systems, Invisalign does not use wires and brackets to reposition your teeth. Instead, it uses a series of transparent trays that are made from medical grade plastic. These trays are made following impressions and scans being taken of your teeth and are designed to offer the optimum performance for each individual patient. Each tray is worn for a short period of time, which we will advise you of during your consultation. During this time, it will gently place a little pressure on your teeth, slowly moving them towards the desired position. When the first tray has completed its task, it is replaced by the second tray, and so the process continues until your teeth are straight and even.
Pros and cons
There are very few ‘cons’ to Invisalign braces. The only significant one is that it is not particularly fast acting, and, depending on the patient’s teeth, may have to be worn for more than a year. This however is compensated for by a number of advantages which include
- Near-Invisibility – The trays, when worn, are hardly noticeable at all, and unless you tell people you have them, it is likely that very few will notice.
- Comfort – Because they are created specifically for you, most people find Invisalign braces comfortable to wear.
- No embarrassment – Eating with traditional braces can be problematic, with food getting stuck in the wiring. With Invisalign, this does not happen as the trays are designed to be removed whilst you eat, meaning that you don’t have to worry about what you can and can’t eat.
- Easier cleaning – Cleaning and flossing whilst wearing traditional braces can be difficult and there is always a risk of food getting trapped and leading to dental decay. Again, with Invisalign, you simply remove them in order to brush and floss your teeth. You will also need to keep the trays clean and we will advise you of the best method to do this when you visit our Wickford dental practice.
Having straight teeth will make your smile more attractive and can now be achieved with a minimum of fuss. If you would like to find out more, please call the Cygnet Dental Practice on 01268 733078.
