Getting a beautiful smile is easier than you think!
Gone are the days when the only option to straighten your teeth was the standard metal train-track braces that had to be worn for years. Nowadays there are systems available that can straighten your teeth in as little as 6 weeks!
There are so many systems that all treat certain ‘problems’. To find out which is suitable for you an orthodontic assessment with the dentist is needed. After a thorough examination and having x-rays taken you will be more aware of which brace is best for you. You will also be given an idea of how quickly you can expect treatment to take and more information about the process. So what type of systems are available now?
There are 2 types of systems- fixed and removable. The dentists at Cygnet offer Six Month Smiles (a fixed orthodontic system) that can straighten your teeth in between 3-9 months. We will also be offering Invisalign (a removable tray system) in the near future. This works in stages. Each set of aligners will move your teeth to a certain position until they are in perfect alignment. If a different system is required we will refer you to an alternative practice to have your treatment.
It is often thought that teeth have to be removed when considering orthodontic treatment. This is not necessarily the case, it depends on the alignment of the teeth and whether space can be created for the teeth to move easily. Both systems are fantastic at re-positioning the teeth but once realigned retention is needed.
Retention comes in the form of again fixed and removable. At Cygnet we like to provide you with both. It is just extra reassurance that your teeth will stay in their new position. A fixed retainer is a small metal wire that is bonded in position behind the front 6 teeth. No one can see it and it may take a few days to get used to it. Unfortunately a fixed retainer prevents you from using floss or dental tape, but interdental brushes can be used instead to clean in between the teeth. A removable retainer looks very similar to a whitening tray. This is worn at night to provide that extra retention but is also a great back up in case of breakage to the fixed retainer. It can be worn until you see your dentist to have it fixed.
We are not going to lie and say treatment is completely pain free. We are re-positioning your teeth so you can expect to be a little uncomfortable from time to time, especially when a new aligner is fitted or adjustments have been made to the brace. We will advise how to cope with this and do our best to make your treatment as comfortable as possible, and we are easily contactable should you have any concerns or worries.
An Added Extra
To compliment your new smile we provide you with Teeth Whitening free of charge. Two weeks of wearing gel filled trays will give you a beautiful, white smile.
It is important to remember that orthodontic treatment will not change the shape of the teeth or the colour, it will merely re-position the existing teeth. If the shape of the teeth was also a concern as well as the alignment an alternative treatment may need to be considered. Discuss your concerns with your dentist at your next examination appointment or alternatively give us a call to make a consultation appointment.
