Aesthetic dental advice for our patients from Wickford and Rayleigh.
Having a nice looking smile can be a real confidence booster and research has also shown that people often make decisions about us in the first few seconds of meeting. If they are greeted with an attractive white smile, the chances are that their first impression will be a positive one.
In today’s Cygnet Dental Practice blog, we look at some suggestions that can help to keep your natural teeth looking white, for as long as possible.
Don’t smoke – As well as avoiding a whole host of serious medical problems, not smoking will avoid those yellow and brown discoloured teeth caused by the tar in cigarettes and other smoking products. The risk of gum disease is also significantly lower in non smokers.
Avoid staining food and drinks – Some drinks, such as red wine and tea are known to stain the teeth, due to the tannin in them. Dark fruits and soy sauce too are guilty of doing the same thing.
Protect your enamel – Keeping your enamel strong and healthy will also help to keep teeth whiter. Allowing erosion to occur through poor cleaning or exposing them to acidic food and drinks means that staining foods will attach more easily to the rough surface.
Professional cleaning – Whilst the prime role of the dental hygienist at the Cygnet Dental Practice is to keep your teeth and gums clean and free from gum disease, a side benefit of the ‘scale and polish’ is that it shatters tartar that has hardened on the surface of your teeth. Removal of this reveals the whiter enamel underneath.
Professional teeth whitening – Even the best looked after teeth will eventually darken in colour. This is simply a part of the ageing process and is unavoidable. Once you have reached this stage, the only way to effectively re-whiten your teeth is with a professional teeth whitening procedure. Trays are made from impressions taken of your teeth and a whitening gel provided to put in them. These are designed to be worn, at home, for a few hours a day, with full results being seen in approximately two weeks. Patients should expect an improvement of up to eight shades in many cases.
Our cosmetic dental team are here to help you have the smile that you deserve. We can not only correct discoloured teeth, but also those which are severely stained. Crooked teeth too can be corrected with our range of modern orthodontics and even missing teeth can be replaced, using dental implants.
