Dental Veneers

Improving the overall appearance quickly and effectively in Wickford, Essex

Porcelain Veneer treatment is one of the most popular types of cosmetic dentistry carried out at Cygnet Dental Practice.

Dental Veneers are used to improve many problems and can be made to match any tooth shade.  They will cover badly stained and discoloured teeth and protect teeth that have minor cracks.  They can also be used to close small gaps, avoiding lengthy orthodontic treatment.

Treatment is usually completed in a matter of weeks meaning getting a beautiful smile is quicker than you thought!

What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin laminates of porcelain which are bonded over your existing teeth to improve the shape, colour and alignment.

Dental Veneers can also be made from composite but the longevity is not as good as Porcelain Veneers.

The procedure

During the consultation with the dentist it will be decided if you are a suitable candidate for Porcelain Veneer treatment and the amount you would need to have. The dentist will advise accordingly but ultimately the decision is completely yours regarding treatment.

Treatment is painless and carried out under a local anaesthetic. A very small amount of tooth structure is removed from the surface of the teeth to make space for the veneer to fit over.  Special instruments are used that allow us to only remove the minimal of tooth structure.

A series of impressions are then taken of the prepared teeth. Photographs may also be taken.  These are then sent to the dental laboratory that will be making your veneers.

Porcelain Veneers usually take between 2-3 weeks to fabricate.  In the meantime you will be fitted with temporary veneers, also called a trial smile. Not only are these used to protect the prepared teeth from sensitivity, but they also give you an idea of how your new smile will look. Any changes you wish to make can be then forwarded onto the Laboratory Technician so he can make these to the permanent veneers.

On the fitting appointment you will be given a local anaesthetic, again to ensure you a completely comfortable during treatment. The temporary veneers are removed and the teeth cleaned.  Your new veneers are then bonded onto your teeth.

The bonding process it what makes the veneers incredibly strong. Any excess cement will be removed and the veneers polished.  Finally your bite will be checked to ensure no excess force is being put onto your veneers.

Aftercare

Just like any treatment you have, your teeth still need to be cared for if not even more after having Porcelain Veneers.  Providing you look after your new smile they will last you many, many years.

Avoid biting your nails, chewing pen lids, anything that could possibly fracture the porcelain.

You will still need to floss or clean in between your teeth and brush as normal.  The veneers will not decay but you can still have gum disease around the teeth.
