Spring Clean Your Teeth And Oral Health

Give your teeth a health check and improve their appearance at the same time!

Although it is probably a little optimistic, some of you will have noticed a few crocuses, snowdrops and daffodils on display, a traditional reminder that spring is not very far away. This time of the year tends to bring a sense of renewal after our long winter slumber as we start to plan our life for the warmer months ahead.

One thing that we tend to do at this time is to give our houses a spring clean, throwing out the old and in with the new. We may also do this with our clothes as well. In our opinion, this is also a good time to give your mouth a spring clean too and in today’s blog, we take a look at what our Wickford patients can do to ‘spring clean’ their teeth and gums.

Equipment

In the spirit of ‘out with the old and in with the new’, this is a good time to change your toothbrush or toothbrush head if you haven’t done so recently. Worn tooth brushes are inefficient at removing food debris and bacteria so treat yourself to a new one or replacement heads and make sure to change these every three months. While you are out shopping, pop some dental floss in your basket (and use it of course). It’s a great way to improve your oral health.

Get a check up

Things happen in life and you may have missed an appointment with one of the dentists at the Cygnet Dental Practice  and forgotten to arrange a new one. Regular check ups are essential if you want to maintain a healthy mouth so make picking up the phone and booking an appointment with us a priority.

Gum health check

Our gums are just as important as our teeth, a fact that surprises a few patients. While gum disease can cause unpleasant symptoms such as sore or bleeding gums and bad breath, the real danger is when it becomes more advanced (periodontitis) and starts to compromise the bone in which our teeth are secured. This can lead to loose teeth or even tooth loss. At this advanced stage it is difficult to treat, but earlier intervention with a ‘scale and polish’ procedure by the dental hygienist is a great way to maintain healthy gums. If you don’t see a hygienist regularly, now is a good time to start.

Having now given our patients the necessary basic advice to keep both teeth and gums healthy going into the warmer part of the year, let us also take a look at a few of our cosmetic dental procedures that can help to make your smile more attractive and ‘holiday ready’ as well.

Whiter teeth

One of our most popular cosmetic treatments is the teeth whitening procedure, and for good reason. This is a highly effective and affordable way of attaining a brighter and whiter smile. The whole treatment is fast acting and non invasive; a great way to give your smile a real boost. Patients with heavily stained teeth, such as heavy smokers, may benefit from having porcelain dental veneers fitted instead.

A straight and even smile

Old style dental braces might deter you from having those crooked and uneven teeth straightened, but by using one of our discreet new generation orthodontic systems, you can now have a nice even smile without the high visibility and inconvenience of ‘old school’ dental braces. Whether you have a slight issue that spoils a smile or a more significant one that affects your bite, we can help you and enable you to have a fantastic new even smile.

Stable tooth replacement options

One of the biggest challenges for dental patients is what to do when they lose a tooth. Some patients opt to stick with a gap in their teeth rather than wear dentures. Unfortunately, failing to replace a missing tooth can have long term consequences and this is where dental implants can really help. They not only replace the visible crown part of the tooth but the tooth root too. This ensures that you have a strong and stable tooth replacement while preventing bone loss in that area of the jaw as well.

These are just some of the treatments that we have available at our Wickford dental clinic that can help you improve your smile. If you also would like to have younger looking skin with fewer wrinkles, we can help with that too using our range of Botox and dermal filler solutions.

We are here to help you with your ‘oral spring clean’. If you would like to book an appointment with us, you can do so by calling the Cygnet Dental Practice today on 01268 733078.
