Taking Care Of Your Smile In 2025

Improved oral health and a more attractive smile could be yours in the new year.

Now that the festivities are well and truly over and the reality of a few drab months ahead are here, why not use this time to take a look at some improvements that can be made in your life, and specifically here, to your oral health?

Our Wickford dental team will be here with you throughout 2025 to offer guidance and advice about care improvements for your teeth and gums as well as to keep you up to date with dentistry news including the benefits that can be gained from modern cosmetic dental treatments.

Our first blog will be a brief overview, to give you some food for thought and perhaps help identify areas of your oral health and smile improvements that you wish to focus on.

General oral health care

There is nearly always room for improvement here and healthy teeth and gums are the foundation of an attractive smile too. There are a few simple things that you can do this year to look after your teeth better and these include.

  • Maintain a healthy toothbrush – change every 3 months
  • Brush for two full minutes morning and night. Time yourself to make sure you aren’t falling short
  • Reduce your sugar intake, especially those that are likely to stick to your teeth for quite a while
  • Brush your gums and not just your teeth
  • Use dental floss if you don’t already
  • Make sure that you have appointments booked at the Cygnet Dental Practice, both with the dentist and dental hygienist
  • Follow any advice that your dentist or hygienist gives you

Just these few simple steps should help to improve the health of your teeth and your gums and allow you to then focus on ways to improve your smile.

Teeth whitening

One of the fastest and most affordable things you can do to improve the appearance of your teeth is to have them whitened. The teeth whitening treatment that we provide is not the fractional improvement that teeth whitening toothpastes might provide (if you are lucky!), but one that can improve the whiteness of your teeth by several shades, leaving you with a much improved smile. Our custom home whitening kit is an effective and convenient way of doing this and, of course, we are here to offer any help and advice throughout the treatment.

Porcelain veneers

Anyone whose teeth are heavily stained or discoloured, may benefit more from having porcelain veneers fitted to their teeth, rather than having them whitened. We will be able to offer advice on this following a consultation with our cosmetic dentists. Fitting veneers does require some invasive dental work but, once fitted, these do offer a semi permanent solution and can last for around ten years before being replaced, providing that you look after them as advised. Veneers may also be used for some minor cosmetic orthodontic issues such as closing small gaps between the teeth in some instances.

White dental fillings

Anyone who has had their teeth filled using the traditional amalgam material will know hw visible this can be. If used on front facing teeth, almost everyone will notice these when you smile. Even rear teeth fillings can be revealed when you laugh or yawn though and is one of the main reasons that many of our Wickford patients are choosing to have white teeth fillings instead.

Orthodontics

One of the more time consuming dental issues that need to be resolved in order to have that special smile is crooked teeth. This requires the use of orthodontics. The traditional way of straightening teeth has been to use teeth braces, most commonly those made from metal and involving wires that are tightened to reposition teeth. Not only can this be a lengthy process but this type of brace is very visible too and can cause discomfort in some patients. Understandably, this has been a deterrent for many, but now you can have your teeth straightened in a much more convenient and comfortable manner using modern discreet orthodontics such as Invisalign. These are custom made to fit directly over your teeth and are made from a transparent medical grade plastic and which are removable when eating and cleaning your teeth. This is a much more smile friendly and convenient approach to tooth straightening.
