Straighten Crooked Teeth The Modern Way!

Straighten Crooked Teeth The Modern Way!

Straight and even teeth without the harsh appearance of traditional braces.

We wish that we could tell you that there was a ‘magic’ way to straighten your teeth without the need for orthodontic treatment (braces), but unfortunately there isn’t one. This makes sense as, in order to correct the position of the teeth, a gentle force has to be applied to ‘push’ them back to their correct position. Currently, orthodontic treatment is the only way to do this.

There are probably some patients of our Wickford dental practice who just read the above paragraph and nodded their heads, saying to themselves “and that’s why I won’t have them straightened”. We do understand that but would also like to draw to your attention the fact that modern orthodontics are not what you probably remember and there are now a number of solutions which we think may encourage you to reconsider!

Goodbye metal braces

Traditional dental braces are usually made with metal wiring and visible brackets. Even with the improvements made in this particular type of brace, there is no getting away from the fact that they are very noticeable and are probably one of the main reasons for people deciding to put up with crooked teeth instead of having this treatment.

The modern way to a beautiful, straight smile

Let us look then, at two types of orthodontic systems that we have available at our popular dentist in Wickford that we feel will be of interest to some of our patients. Each type of orthodontic serves a different purpose so let us take a look at these now.

Full arch teeth straightening

The first problem we will take a look at is for people who need a large number of their teeth straightening. This will include those towards the side and rear of the mouth. You might ask why you need to correct the less visible ones but the fact is that even though they are not as visible, crooked teeth in these areas can still be problematic. These teeth can cause problems with an incorrect bite. Not only can this make chewing more difficult but the incorrect ‘coming together’ of teeth over time is likely to lead to premature wearing or even breakages. Add to this the fact that crooked teeth are usually more difficult to keep clean and you can see how tooth decay is more likely in these areas.

In order to straighten these teeth, a lengthier treatment is necessary. With traditional braces, a year or more of wearing them and putting up with people’s stares can be very challenging. Thankfully, there is now a way to correct them in an almost invisible manner and without the difficulties in eating that some find, with food sometimes becoming trapped in the braces.

Say hello to Invisalign, a revolutionary new system that abandons the use of wires and brackets altogether. Instead of this, you will be provided with a series of clear medical grade plastic ‘trays’ that will be worn over your teeth. These are produced from impressions and scans that we take of your teeth and these are designed to progressively move your teeth to their correct position. Each tray is worn for a short while before being replaced by the next. Each will gradually and gently move your teeth towards their final position.

Not only is this method very discrete but also avoids the difficulties associated with eating while wearing braces. It does this, very simply, by allowing you to remove them from your mouth in order to eat, and also for cleaning your teeth, before replacing them afterwards. This makes Invisalign a leading name in teeth straightening treatments and is very popular for those looking to have straighter teeth in an almost invisible manner and with the added convenience of being removable.

 ‘Social Six’ teeth straightening

Not everybody needs such extensive teeth straightening. Most of us probably bite ok but are more concerned with some of our front teeth being crooked. The biggest impact for people in this situation is often on their confidence. A nice smile goes a long way and having to reveal crooked or overlapping teeth when you do so, can cause some people to avoid certain social occasions. For people in this situation, let us introduce you to the ‘Six Month Smile’ orthodontic system. This is designed especially to correct the positioning of the social six teeth. These are the ones that people most see when you smile.

As the name would suggest, this is a much quicker treatment than Invisalign as it is designed to do a different job altogether. The ‘six months’ in its name is the average time it takes to straighten your teeth and minor corrections may take even less than that. Our Wickford dentists will be able to advise you of how long you may need to wear these during your initial consultation with us.

The orthodontics themselves work in a similar way to traditional braces, using wires and brackets. However, both of these are made from materials that will blend in well with your natural teeth and are much less visible than traditional metal braces. This helps people to feel more confident while wearing them and we are sure you will also feel much more confident in your smile afterwards too.
