Comfort And Discretion – Reasons To Choose Invisalign ‘Braces’

Comfort And Discretion – Reasons To Choose Invisalign ‘Braces’

Our Wickford and Rayleigh dentist looks at this popular orthodontic system.

The thought of having to wear dental braces may deter some people from having their teeth straightened. A lot of patients would probably rather have crooked teeth than have to put up with a mouth full of highly visible metal braces for a year or more. Whilst this used to be the only way to have nice even teeth, this is no longer the case, and a new generation of comfortable and convenient orthodontics can achieve the same thing, without the disadvantages.

Whilst some cosmetic dental braces, such as the Six Month Smile system, continue to use wires and brackets, albeit in a much more discreet and comfortable way, there is a longer term orthodontic for more general teeth straightening that abandons this approach altogether. At the Cygnet Dental Practice, we are pleased to provide one of the most popular of this new breed of orthodontics; Invisalign.

No more wires

Instead of using wires and brackets to move your teeth into position, Invisalign uses a series of plastic trays that are of medical grade quality and are transparent. These are custom made for each patient and are produced following impressions being taken of their teeth.

Each tray is placed over the teeth for a short while, usually around two weeks, until it has moved the teeth according to the aims of that particular tray. Once this has been achieved, the next tray in the series is fitted, which will continue the process. This continues until all of the teeth are in the correct positions.

Just invisible?

Sometimes called ‘invisible braces’,  the truth is that they can be seen, but only if you look really hard. Most passers by and casual contacts will most likely never notice them. This helps patients to overcome concerns about their appearance whilst they are having their teeth straightened.

Although the near invisibility is a key reason why people opt for this system, it is not the only one. Unusually for an orthodontic, this system is designed to be easily removed by the patient. Whilst doing this too frequently is discouraged, as this will cause the treatment time to take longer, you should do so when you are eating, and also for cleaning your teeth. By doing this, patients can easily overcome the problems of tooth decay and gum disease that some dental brace wearers suffer from. Keeping your teeth clean whilst wearing traditional braces can be very difficult, but, with Invisalign, you simply remove them, eat your meal, or clean your teeth, rinse or clean the trays and put them back over your teeth.

We are sure that if more of our Wickford and Rayleigh patients were aware of this system they would be only too happy to consider having their teeth straightened, helping to create a great looking smile.
