Long Lasting Dental Implants In Wickford, Essex

Could your dental implants last you for 50 years? It is possible!

As we have mentioned in previous Cygnet Dental Practice blogs, dental implants, providing that they are looked after correctly, can last for twenty years, and very often more.

Twenty years is a good run for any tooth replacement method, but if we could make them last for fifty years, wouldn’t that be so much better?

This may sound like a wish, rather than anything based on facts, but it has happened. In fact, it happened to the second person ever to have dental implants placed.

50 year dental implants

The first ever person to have implants placed, died in 2006, but with his implants still fully functional after 40 years. The second implant patient, Mr Sven Johannsson managed to do even better!

In 1967, Sven was working as a taxi driver in Gothenberg, and, as taxi drivers do, talked to most of his passengers. On discussing the problems that he had with his teeth, losing them all by the time he was in his forties, with one of his passengers, he learned about dental implants. Yes, by chance, Sven’s passenger was none other than the first ever recipient of dental implants, Mr Gösta Larsson. Gösta gave Sven the details of his dentist, Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark, the inventor of dental implants, and an appointment was made.

Treatment and aftercare

To replace all of his missing teeth, Sven underwent treatment to have two bridges secured by 11 dental implants on the upper and lower jaw. This system, although refined with progress, is still largely in use today. In fairness to Sven, taking this decision must have been a brave one given that he was only the second person ever to have the treatment. Now, of course, thousands, and perhaps even millions of people have had this treatment carried out successfully, worldwide.

This revolutionary treatment enabled Sven, as it could our Wickford and Rayleigh patients, to participate in social situations that he had been avoiding for some time due to his loose dentures.

One important factor in the longevity of Sven’s implants is the fact that he has taken very good care of his teeth and gums, and issues such as peri-implantitis have been avoided. He has also maintained regular visits to his dental practice to make sure that there were no problems.

Whilst we can’t promise that your dental implants will last for 50 years, it is a good example of what can be achieved through a combination of skilled dentistry and ongoing care.
