Veneers For A Brand New Smile At Cygnet Dental In Wickford

Porcelain veneers offer a long lasting solution for heavily stained and chipped teeth.

If your teeth have become stained or discoloured over the years, you may have considered having them professionally whitened. This is becoming an increasingly popular option for a lot of people and has become socially acceptable and even desirable. While most people will opt for a teeth whitening procedure, given the choice; this might not be the best solution for everyone.

Those whose teeth are badly stained or have small flaws such as visible cosmetic cracks are more likely to benefit from having veneers fitted rather than have the whitening procedure which could make any chips etc look even more noticeable than before.

Veneers offer a very good solution for anyone who wants to whiten their smile from what might be a poor starting position. The veneers will actually replace the badly stained tooth enamel rather than trying to improve it as is the case with teeth whitening. In most cases then, this will require some minor invasive dentistry at our Wickford dental practice.

What to expect?

Before any treatment is carried out to improve your smile, you will need to have an initial dental consultation with us. During this we can discuss the various options that are available and it also allows you to ask any questions you might have. Any problems that are  present, such as gum disease, will also need to be treated before the treatment takes place.

When you have the treatment itself, you will be given a local anaesthetic so the procedure proceeds in relative comfort. A fine layer of the damaged or stained enamel is then shaved away from the front of the relevant teeth. Impressions of the prepared teeth are then taken and these will be used by a special laboratory to make your new veneers and your teeth will be protected with temporary veneers in the meantime.

When the Cygnet Dental Practice receives your new veneers back from the laboratory, we will contact you to arrange to come in to have them fitted. This is relatively straightforward and we will first remove the temporary veneers before fitting your new ones. Finally, they will be trimmed and polished to give them a natural and attractive appearance.

Dental veneers are an excellent solution to the problem of badly stained teeth, or teeth with flaws such as mentioned previously.  They can last ten years ore more if you look after them correctly.

Veneers and appropriate aftercare

Once you have your new teeth veneers, it is important that you don’t neglect them. The veneers themselves aren’t likely to deteriorate but if you neglect the natural tooth that they are attached to, decay could occur and any fillings needed could change the shape of the tooth, making them fit less securely. Although veneers are very secure and incidents of them becoming detached are quite rare, it can happen, and especially if the rest of the tooth is changed in any way. In the unlikely event that a veneer does come away from the tooth, please do not attempt to reattach it yourself.  Some patients have attempted to do this themselves using an everyday adhesive, with disastrous results. If they do become detached, please contact us so that we can restore them correctly.

Although porcelain veneers are highly stain resistant, please get into the habit of brushing all of the tooth, just as you would a natural healthy tooth. Also make sure to floss gently between your teeth as well.

In theory, apart from some temporary surface staining that might occur until you clean your teeth, you should be able to eat anything you like without worrying about discolouration.

If you are unsure about what treatment would be most suitable for you, why not make an appointment to see one of our Wickford cosmetic dentists where we can discuss your options with you? We will examine your teeth and generate a suitable treatment plan to help you get the most from your smile.
